San Francisco corporate attorney Will Connelly's well-ordered life is shattered when he watches a colleague hurtle to his death outside his office window. Within days, Will is the prime suspect in a murder, the target of an SEC insider trading investigation, and a pawn in a complex criminal scheme involving the Russian mafia and a ruthless terrorist plot.
Now, Will must ensure that a deadly enemy doesn't gain access to the nation's most sensitive and confidential information -- and the power to do incalculable, irrevocable harm.

The Insider eBook Reece Hirsch
I read a lot of books but rarely write a review. Most books that I read are good but nothing special. After awhile they tend to all blend together so it was refreshing to read a book that stood out to me. It didn't blend into all of the other books that I read. While this is a legal thriller, it does not take place in the court room. The lead character is Will Connelly, a fast rising attorney in a large San Francisco law firm. He finally, makes partner, goes out to celebrate and his life suddenly take s a turn for the worst.
From that point on, Will desperately tries to avoid being arrested for murder or insider trading and, on a more basic level, just staying alive.
There are plenty of bad people, and plenty of people who may or may not be bad. Who is really on Will's side and who is setting him up?
There are a number to twists and turns to the story and I never wanted to put the book down. That is my measure of a good story!
The book is similar to a Grisham book that is better written, closer to maybe Baldacci. As an attorney myself I appreciate a lot of the detail relating to life in a law firm. The rivalries within the law firm, rainmaking trumps being a great lawyer, the long hours, the attorney who has to have his documents paper clipped in a specific manner, etc. It felt like a real law firm which made the rest of the story more believable to me. I can't tell you how many legal stories I have read by authors who obviously no nothing about the law, lawyers and how law firms really operate!
I look forward to reading more books by Mr. Hirsch.

The Insider eBook Reece Hirsch Reviews
4.5 Stars because it could have been faster paced, but this was a very well-written book that had a likable protagonist and a really interesting plot. It's been done before--think "The Firm" but not as intense. It has its own unique twists and the author does a great job of bringing you to the point of wondering, "How in the heck is he going to get out of all of this?!" and then takes you to an ending that is quite plausible, if not exactly new and inventive.
That comes later..." Crime thriller jumped off to a great start literally speaking (with fall of man from thirty-eight floors up) and only got more intriguing with addition of Russian mafia, security violations, and terrorism elements later on. Protagonists (Willa and Claire) were eminently likable and loved mention of music from "Thievery Corporation" (have to get me some now after having listened to several tracks while writing this review). An exciting read I really enjoyed and leave you with one more passage for which I'll always remember the book, "Every time an affluent white guy with a law degree goes to jail, another SEC agent gets his wings." Very good book!
Will realizes he's been made a scapegoat when Ben Fisher a co-worker goes flying off the building where they both work and it's not a cut and dry suicide. The dead man has his access keys, but why and how? What ensues is a roller coaster ride through which Will is kidnapped, beaten, threatened and coerced into giving information to 2 wannabe Russians thugs who are trying to make a name for themselves and get very rich in the long run. Will has to use his witt and intelligence to outsmart the Russians, the government and the one man he thought he could trust. Well written suspenseful story of corporate greed, foreign crime bosses and insider trading. Highly recommend this book and author.
It's unfortunate that now suggests both questions and words when a reader decides to write a review and at least one choice has to be made before the reader can access a text box. Let me first of all take back the adjective 'predictable' that I had to choose (the other two options, 'some twists' and 'full of surprises' having been equally unsuitable to me).
The Insider is an okay-ish first novel, and suffers from several issues, including lack of verisimilitude in timing (both in action and reaction) and plot elements, flat characterization, material credibility (or lack thereof, witnessed by the number of cellphones the hero seems to have at any one critical time, for example, or his knowledge about encryption contrasting starkly with his obvious lack of knowledge of GPS locating, electronic surveillance, bugging, use of credit cards, etc...), and the Superman complex - the hero simultaneously thinks instantly and not enough, comes to startlingly accurate conclusions without access to necessary facts, and manages to make vital opponents spill the beans on their true intentions and actions at the drop of a hat.
If a reader is willing to suspend or to completely shut down his or her disbelief for long enough and thoroughly enough, then this is an entertaining short read. However, once you start noticing incongruities, those annoying little oddities pile up very quickly and make finishing the book quite painful.
This was Hirsch's debut novel, and I picked it up after reading his third novel - Intrusion. Let's just say, he learned a lot between his first and third. This is a good novel with decent writing, but not up to the level that he has now reached.
I dislike novels where I think the author has the character act illogically. And Will Connelly, certainly acts illogically, as far as I am concerned. As the plot turns out, he never had a chance and was being set up, but, given the facts that he had at the time, he did not act logically.
The reader, again, sees the inside of a law firm and the pressure put on the Associates, and those seeking to make the level of "equity partner." If you have ever read a novel involving a big law firm - you already know the pressures and such, but the author seems to go a tad overboard on those issues.
We have the big bad Russian mafia, the tech company environment, stock market manipulations, cyber security, all the things that make for a decent plot, and the author handles them well.
I did like the reference to Covey's "Seven Habits" where the author has our "hero" Will ask the question "What self-help book have you been reading? The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Sociopaths?" Nice touch!
